Ibrahim
Rashidi, journalist and blogger from the province of
Azerbaijan arrested on Monday
June 14, 2010.
On Monday afternoon Rashidi was meeting with a friend atArdebilbazaar
before hearrestedon his way to his sister’s home.
According to a report by
ADAPP News, witnesses
claim that security forces were pursuingIbrahim Rashidi on his way to
his sister’s home.There is still no word on the official cause of
Rashidi’s arrest or his current whereabouts.
Recently, security officials searched the residence ofIbrahim Rashidi’s
father in Meshkin Shahr. During the search they confiscated his writings
and books.
Rashidi was also arrested in 2006 and served a five-month prison term in
Orumiyeh, after being arrested again in 2007.
Ibrahim Rashidi was a writer for the monthly periodicalBayaramand
the banned weekly paperNavid-eAzerbaijan.
He was a member of the non-government organization Azertoprag, a
professor at the Shahriar Cultural Society inOrumiyehUniversity, and
managed operations for the student newspaperOlduzwhile
serving as editor for another student publicationBolut.
In April and May of 2006, Amnesty International issued statements
condemning the continued harassment and detention of Azerbaijani
journalists and bloggers.
